We all want to make sure that when we turn on our televisions that everybody is having their stories told. You know, as actors we reflect humanity, so we want that to be everybody’s humanity, whether you’re black, white, Latin@, young, old, no matter what your socioeconomic background or sexual orientation, you should be able to see yourself on TV. To see someone who’s like you, telling a story.

ABC’s Scandal broke solidly on Thursday night, scoring a 2.1 demo rating in its  debut. That’s down just a tenth from what Private Practice last delivered in the 10 o’clock perch, while its total viewership (7.5 million) marks the best retention (91%) out of Grey’s in three years — and the best audience retention ever for a non-crossover episode.

Kerry Washington and Former Bush press aide Judy Smith discuss “Scandal” on Nightline last night.

I wasn’t looking to do television, but my agents told me I had to read this script. I was scared to though because I knew it was Shonda. I thought, “Oh no, this is going to be really good and I have four movies coming out this year,” so I really had no business doing a TV show [laughs]. I read it and it was so good I threw the script across the room. It was tremendous. It just happened to be half as long as most of the scripts I read. Which is kind of fun. So I wanted this. I asked what I had to do and it turns out I had to beat out a lot of other actresses [laughs].
